VINI adds Layer 2 virtual networks to PlanetLab slices. All of the public VINI nodes are running Trellis, which provides the kernel support for virtual topologies. For general information on how to create and manage a PlanetLab or VINI slice, please consult the PlanetLab Guides.
Topology Creation
Currently there are two ways to obtain a virtual topology in your slice: ask for the "default" virtual topology, which will be set up automatically for you, or create one yourself using scripts that we provide.
- Trellis Automatic Topology Creation
-
This guide explains how a default virtual topology can be set up in your slice automatically. This is probably the best option for new users of VINI.
- Trellis v0.1 Power User Guide
-
This guide explains how to create an arbitrary virtual topology in your slice on VINI using some simple scripts.
VINI Administration
- MyVINI Administrators Guide
-
This guide explains how to bring up your own private VINI installation running the same software as the public VINI.
Old Guides
The PL-VINI software is no longer actively supported but it should work on the current PlanetLab / VINI testbeds. These guides are also useful as references for Trellis, since the scripts for configuring arbitrary virtual topologies in Trellis are derived from PL-VINI.

PL-VINI is a VINI prototype built using the public PlanetLab. Thanks to Chris Reason of BT for some fixes to get PL-VINI working on PlanetLab v4.2.
